Glossary: SEO, AI, e-commerce and WordPress
Clear definitions of the key web terms, from SEO in the AI era to e-commerce. A reference glossary maintained by the agency Seganiko.
- GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)
- GEO is the optimisation of a site to be cited by AI answer engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews. It complements SEO by working on machine readability (structured data, llms.txt) and third-party corroboration.
- AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)
- AEO is optimisation for answer engines, which provide a direct answer rather than a list of links. Close to GEO, it aims to become the source an AI assistant cites to answer a question.
- Zero-click search
- A zero-click search ends directly on the results page, without a click to an external site. In 2025, nearly 60% of Google searches are zero-click, a phenomenon amplified by AI Overviews.
- AI Overviews
- AI Overviews are Google’s AI-generated summaries shown at the top of search results. They answer the query directly and sharply reduce clicks to source sites.
- Server-side tracking
- Server-side tracking collects analytics data via a server you control, instead of the visitor’s browser. It improves measurement reliability against blockers and browser restrictions, while respecting consent.
- Core Web Vitals
- Core Web Vitals are Google’s metrics measuring user experience: loading speed (LCP), responsiveness (INP) and visual stability (CLS). They influence ranking and conversion.
- Headless WordPress
- Headless WordPress uses WordPress only as a content-management back-end, with the front-end built separately (often in JavaScript). It offers performance and flexibility at the cost of increased complexity.
- CMP (Consent Management Platform)
- A CMP is a cookie consent management tool. To be GDPR-compliant, it must block non-essential cookies before consent and allow a refusal as simple as acceptance.
- TCO (Total Cost of Ownership)
- TCO is the full cost of a solution over its lifetime: purchase, hosting, development, maintenance and hidden costs. It allows two platforms to be compared objectively beyond the headline price.
- LLM (Large Language Model)
- An LLM is an artificial-intelligence model trained to understand and generate natural language, such as GPT or Claude. It powers chatbots, AI assistants and answer engines.
